Have a look at

and then ask yourself the question - why do I want to convert the files - for further post processing? for printing? dng is incompatible with NX2 so you would then be working in LR4.

I shoot NEF files exclusively because I know that I am going to post process each image and I can save the NEF file - NX2, of course, allows you to save changes so that you can review Original/New Version(s).

For me it is horses for courses - these days NX2 is for "basic" post processing, but I do like the Nik tools/plug-ins - same with Nik Plug-ins for CS5.

DxO is for substantial post processing (love the film emulations that it offers as well!), but most importantly it corrects for camera and lens idiosyncrasies (especially with very wide angle lenses - example: restoring head shapes that can be distorted at 16mm focal length)

Postscript: if you haven't already have a look at:

for great e-publications for getting the most out of NX2
