Please explain: Why a very small camera body & huge huge lens, why is it desirable?

I get the big sensor small cam, small pancake lens, small + small = small, I like!

But why the small cam, but huge lens that dwarfs the cam, or just lens much bigger and likely NOT very balanced to hold?

Of course, a huge 500mm or 1000mm lens on ANY camera is 'unbalanced' (thats why the tripod mount is on lens) but the earlier was not this lens size I refer to but 40-140mm or something similar.

When I try these in the store, I say sure with a small lens these cams are nice (NEX, EOS-M, etc) but put on a nice zoom and I go, well it is quite a bit harder to hold now, not so easy and harder to 'touch screen' it now, unless on tripod.

Just wondered why so many are enamored by this new breed of cam, do they not have but 1 lens?

Thanks for the elucidation!!
