Apple doesn't need Nikon or their gear. If they want to design a smartphone with a larger sensor and lens, they're capable of doing it using internal resources.

The camera market is mature, competitive, and saturated, and the smartphone/tablet market is about there (a couple more years) too. Apple's going to need their cash to insure they can survive if the next couple innovations don't take off (e.g., smarter television and wearable appliances).

They're not interested in becoming a conglomerate. If they were, they'd just go out and buy GE and Ford. If they had wanted a network, they would have gone and bought Verizon.

Apple (Steve Jobs) exited the camera business in 1997 (Apple QuickTake 200 by Fuji).
