Nikon should put its expertise to work in other fields
In reply to HowardChernin, 10 months ago

It worked for Leica, Olympus, Zeiss, Canon, Ricoh. They put their optical expertise to work in other fields: Leica and Zeiss make precision optical alignment tools, Olympus pretty much owns the medical imaging field, Canon and Ricoh are heavy into electrostatic imaging, though they probably want to diversify as the copier and printer are on the decline.

Here's one possible example: vision systems for manufacturing, optical inspection systems for assembly lines.

Right now, the cost of cameras and supporting software for vision systems is very high, a couple of grand each just for the cameras. The One system could form the basis for a vision system camera, it's small enough to fit on assembly lines, yet resolution is high enough to offer very high quality images. Plus, Nikon has a good AF system on the One, so the lenses wouldn't need to be fixed focus. Greater optical precision, better results. And, since the One is mass produced, a variation in a rugged housing wouldn't be that expensive.

Modify Capture to outline the inspected parts for pattern recognition, add an OPC server so that it can communicate with remote systems, and they're in business. Give me a call, Nikon - I can help you with both pattern recognition and developing an OPC server. Or partner with an existing vendor like Omron for very high precision inspection systems, things that current vision cameras just don't quite have the resolution for.

Best of all, a lot of the development costs of the One system have already been paid for. It means they can get into this market with a minimal investment - a rugged case, a wired ethernet connection, and comm firmware.

Nikon's good name would be a bonus - they're recognized for imaging excellence across the world. As long as the new system met with the high standards expected of Nikon's current products, it would sell well.

They won't get rich, but it would be a steady revenue stream to get them through the ups and downs of the amateur photography market.

Take a look around, Nikon. There are a lot of industries that could benefit from your expertise.
