I've gone on a bit of a lens buying spree with the NEX 16mm and wide angle adapter in the mail right now. I was looking for a Pen 38mm as it's quite highly regarded but have an opportunity to get the 40mm instead.

Handling wise, are there any issues? I've heard that it does not have clicks at every aperture stop.

Mine has clicks at 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4 etc. but not in between.

Also, how well does it work with focus peaking at wider apertures (1.4 to 2.8)?

Very well it seems to me.  I only use it in that range.  I have a lot of MF lenses and it works fine.

I currently use a Konica Hexanon 40mm so basically I was hoping for something more useable around f2. It's also not the easiest lens to manual focus.

I don't have that so I can't make any comparison.

I've seen a few 38/40mm sharpness comparisons which seem to be a toss up. It would seem that the 40mm has lower contrast but that could be the processing on the images I've seen. Bokeh by all accounts is less busy - any comments?

In the Pen F series I have used only the 40mm 1.4 and the 70mm, so I cannot compare to the 38mm.  On the other hand I have tested upwards of 40 manual focus lenses, most with very good reputations.  My evaluation criteria in this focal length range are center sharpness and bokeh with handling as a third factor, as I shoot mostly informal portraits.  The Pen F 40mm is a favorite of mine based on those criteria and its overall look.

The SEL5018, which I use a lot, is certainly technically better.  Overall it is better than any manual focus 50 I have tested and so there are very few other 50s I am willing to mount and use.  However the Pen F 40 always feels like a good choice, unless I am not in a mood for MF.

If anyone has some wide open shots, I'd like to see that.

Here are two somewhat old (Shot with Nex 3) test shots. They have some slight defects, but such as they are I provide them.  The first at 1.4 and the second at 2.8.  (Note that I mostly shoot at F2 in practice, not 1.4 because it is soft, not 2.8 because I want the shallower dof.)

Thanks.
