Tips for Capturing the America's Cup?

I'm excited to have the opportunity to view one of the America's Cup finals this week in San Francisco. The boats they are racing (AC-72) are part yacht, part airplane, and totally insane. These boats reach speeds of up to 40 knots, which is just crazy.

I'll be on one of the charter boats in the designated viewing areas out on the bay. I'll be using a NIkon D600 and a Nikkor 70-200mm VRII, and maybe a 1.7TC.

I have no idea just how close we will be to the racing craft, or for how long. I can just imagine the conditions are going to be challenging: I'll be on a moving vehicle, on water, trying to photograph a target moving at 50mph.

The Nikkor has Vibration Reduction - is this going to help me at all in this situation? Do I even bother turning it on?

Does anyone else have any tips on how to approach this?

I would love to get some good images, but if I can't get any decent shots I'll likely just bag the gear and enjoy the show.
