Interesting question. One that would surely get people rev up ...

I travel a lot. And I was just back from a 15-days central Europe trip (Paris, Bern, Interlaken, Lucerne, Zurich, Munich, Prague, Berlin, Frankfurt) ....

For this trip, I wanted to travel "light" w/o sacrificing too much IQ. Therefore, my travel kit: D800E, Nikon 24 f1.4G, Sigma 35 f1.4 Art, Nikon 85 f1.8, SB 700, Tripod + accesssories (Leaving behind: Nikon 24-70 f2.8G, Nikon 70-200 f2.8G, Nikon 200 f4 makro).

There were times when I wished I would have something longer than 85. There were times when I wished I would have something wider than 24. Oh well ....

On the other hand, my wife decided to just use her Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone. She did great. Some of her pics were, I think, better than mine. Our son used a Canon G12.

All in all, I managed. This is a process where "it evolves over time" --- at least for me ... Something is always "wrong" or "incomplete".

You dont get it 100%, impossible --- as it is very much dependent upon your itinerary, the storage capacity/capability of your suitcase/carry-on, your activities but at the very least, you try to cover 95% of the shots.

A side note ....

I'm now looking for a well cared for Nikon 180mm or Carl Zeiss 135mm.

May be someday, I would own the the coveted Carl Zeiss 15mm

One thing I can conclude .... a backpack is good for carrying all these gears but a messenger bag is more efficient in getting my gears "ready at a moment notice".

FWIW --- I hope these things (quests for the perfect travel kit) dont hinder you from taking great shots ....

Cheers!

Do you find you like shooting the 24, 35 and 85 f/1.4 as a set?

Jeff

It is by no means my 'permanent' travel light set. I was just experimenting. This is the fun part about photography.

The Nikon 24mm f1.4 was used 'least' on street photography ... but was awesome for night shots wide open.

I might try a different set up next time ... Zeiss 18 or Zeiss 21, Sigma 35, Nikon 85 and Zeiss 135?

Minimal edit from RAW to JPEG.
