Some people see legal sanctions against unnatural and immoral behavior to be a kindness, not only for society as a whole but also for individuals tempted to engage in such behavior. This issue poses a difficult dilemma for people providing a public service. For someone believing that an act such as abortion is wrong and should be illegal, can they work as a taxi driver, knowing that there may be times they'll be dropping off a pregnant woman at an abortion clinic? Since 2003, bakers, photographers, caterers, etc., in New Mexico are expected to provide direct services to aid in the celebration of something (homosexual unions) that they not only find personally abhorrent but also recognize as ultimately destructive to those engaged in it. The loving thing is to refuse service, a message reminding the potential customer of the evil they are about to do, yet if they want to continue in their chosen profession, they must perform the service asked of them.

This is very dubious. On this basis ('the loving thing', being cruel to be kind, it's all for the best), some people might argue that you shouldn't educate the poor, because they will be more contented if left in ignorance. Or that ethnic minorities should be encouraged to lead separate lives because integration only leads to dissatisfaction. Or that illegitimate babies should be snatched from their mothers, because 'they will be happier in the long run, and we know what's best for them'.

I don't think it is right to impose legal sanctions just because (a) you personally disapprove of the behaviour in question; and (b) because you think you are doing the people concerned a favour. The people whose lives you wish to control might, just possibly, have an opinion in the matter, and they might not agree with you. Consenting adults don't need your advice in this area, nor have you any right to assume the moral high ground and then express your stance in legal sanctions.

I assume, incidentally, that you are similarly in favour of gun control based on law, given that guns ruin more lives in the US every day than homosexual marriages ever have.
