You may want to take my suggestions with a grain of salt, since I now travel with my m43 kit and I use my D800E mostly for local landscape photography.

When I used to travel with my D300, my standard kit was the 17-55mm f/2.8 for landscapes and as a walkaround lens; the 70-300mm VR for wildlife and landscapes; a "fun" lens like the 10.5mm fisheye (landscapes) or the 105mm f/2.8 VR (macro, flowers, portraits); and a tripod.
