Is there a place for a 'medium quality' zoom? f2.8-f4?

Whilst I welcome the imminent Olympus zoom, I probably won't buy it.

I would be more likely to buy a 12-40mm f2.8-f4.0 zoom however (a la Fuji's offering), if the size and cost could be reduced a little. I think such a lens would be a logical choice because:

a) On M43 you do need large apertures for reasonable DoF control. Even f2.8 on a zoom gives relatively limited DoF control and means many people will still be tempted to carry a fast prime (or two) along with the zoom

b) Having said that, f4 at 40mm still gives a little subject isolation for head/shoulders shots, and in conjunction with a 12mm bottom end would offer a significant increase in usability over the kit zooms.

I realise I am contradicting myself a little there.. Of course such a lens would also have to perform better than a kit zoom optically. Anyone else agree?

Slow Friday here...
