For the long lens on a safari the new 80-400 AF-s plus TC 14 e probably has no equal below the price point of 200-400 or fast primes.

It has tripod mode VR for use on a bean bag, and should be easily included in aircraft carry on weight allowance.

In the UK you could rent the lens and converter.

In Kenya or Tanzania if you guide is good you can get within 5 feet of a lion, so an 18-105 fits this need.
