QUICK FIX ACTIONS AND PANEL

Here are a set of Photoshop Actions I created to automate various standard image manipulation techniques or sequences that I often use. You can download from here:

http://tonyswash.com/Quick-Fix-Actions.zip

When run each action creates a new duplicate layer so when complete the newly adjusted image is on it's own layer above the original untouched image.

Like any automated image manipulation some of these actions work better on some images than on others, often the effects of an action need to be adjusted by changing the opacity of the action layer or by selective masking.

A few of these actions are just utility actions that don't change the image appearance but do other useful things like making layers masks from channels or changing canvas size.

These actions can be run on top of one another, stacking a new layer on top of the previous layer, and at all times the original start image is untouched on the bottom layer. I suggest you experiment to see which actions you prefer, what works best on any given image and what actions work well in combination. All these actions with the exception of the Enhance Detail action, are completed very quickly, the Enhance Detail action takes more time because of the processor intensive Surface Blur adjustment and how long this takes depends on image resolution and the speed of your system.

I hope these actions are useful. Feedback always welcome.

QUICK FIX ACTION DESCRIPTIONS

Tone And Contrast Actions

HIRALOAM Luminosity

This action applies the HIRALOAM (high Radius Low Amount) Unsharp Mask technique to just the Lightness layer in LAB mode then converts back to RGB. It boost local contrast.

CMYK Contrast

This action extracts the Black channel from a CMYK version of the image and appliers it in Multiply mode to boost contrast.

LAB Shadow Highlights

This action converts the image to LAB color mode and then applies the Shadow Highlights adjustment to just the Lightness layer in LAB mode then converts back to RGB.

LAB Brightness/Contrast

This action converts the image to LAB color mode and opens the Brightness Contrast adjustment sliders operating on just the just the lightness channel.

Detail Actions

LAB Sharpen

This action converts the image to LAB color mode, sharpens just the lightness channel, and then applies a halo removal technique involving a conversion to the CMYK color space, finally the image is converted back to RGB. NOTE: Sometimes colors in the RGB color space can be out of gamut in the CMYK color space, you can check whether any colors in your image will be out of gamut by using the Gamut Warning item in the View menu in Photoshop.

The halo removal technique involving a conversion to the CMYK color space is also available in this action set as a stand alone action, see below.

Halo Removal via CMYK

This action converts the image to CMYK and removes halos created by sharpening or contrast adjustments, finally the image is converted back to RGB. NOTE: Sometimes colors in the RGB color space can be out of gamut in the CMYK color space, you can check whether any colors in your image will be out of gamut by using the Gamut Warning item in the View menu in Photoshop.

Manny Librodo

This action uses the sharpen technique developed by Manny Librodo to sharpen images. It is described in detail here:

http://www.ehow.com/way_5187420_manny-librodo-sharpening-technique.html

Enhance Detail

This technique uses the so called Freaky Detail technique developed by the photographer Calvin Hollywood, it brings out amazing detail in images.

It is explained in this Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TIaqBZO-xs

This technique is powerful and it's intensity often needs to be controlled by using the opacity setting on the layer or it can be selectively applied (to just the eyes in portraits for example) by using a masking.

Hi-Pass Overlay

This action uses the Hi-Pass filter in Overlay blend mode to boost detail contrast

Color Actions

LAB Color Boost

This action boost color saturation in LAB mode by increasing color contrast in just the A and the B channels whilst leaving the lightness values unchanged then converts back to RGB.

LAB Multiply

This action boost color saturation and contrast in LAB mode by applying a LAB color channel in Mutlply blend mode.

Fix Skin Tone

This action tries to select skin tone areas and reduce red saturation to compensates for camera sensors producing over saturation in the red channel in skins (usually caused by the sensor picking up infra red heat radiation).

Utility Actions

Make Channel Mask

This action creates three new layers each with a separate mask built from the red, green and blue channels, the masks have been intensified by use of the Hard Light blend mode and blurred. These masks can be dragged or copied to a layer mask to selectively apply masking, I recommend experimenting by inverting the masks.

Bigger Canvas

This action increases the canvas size to 140% all around an image. I use this action when doing transform actions such as scaling or skewing

Flatten

This flattens all layers and ensures the image is in RGB mode.
