Sorry to say this bosjohn, but you've made this waaaay too complicated in your convoluted theory of why SLRs beat out rangefinders. It's actually a lot simpler. SLRs gave us TTL viewing, while rangefinders did not. TTL viewing won out, so SLRs won out. TTL viewing was a huge advantage because you actually got to see the view produced by your lens. Stick a 50mm lens on your camera, and that's what you saw in your viewfinder. Stick a 150mm lens on your camera, and that's what you saw in your viewfinder. Stick a 300mm lens on your camera, and that's what you saw in your viewfinder. Stick a zoom lens on your camera, and you saw whatever your lens was zoomed to. Rangefinders were simply *never* going to offer TTL viewing, so they were forever handicapped by that limitation and disadvantage. People saw that, and ultimately rejected rangefinders as a more limited photographic platform. The camera manufacturers ended up rejecting it, too. It was simply camera-type Darwinism. The superior camera form factor (SLR) won out over the inferior one (rangefinder). And as history has clearly shown, SLRs continued to evolve and flourish, like an adaptable species.

But now that we have Live View, there is no longer any need for mirrors and pentaprisms. You get TTL viewing from almost every digital camera.

So there is no longer the need for the complex optical arrangements, needing careful matching and calibration, that were required in the days of film.

The one remaining advantage of a rangefinder (not an SLR) is that there is no image blackout in the viewfinder when you shoot. But a simple wireframe finder would provide that.
