Why E-M1 will fail
Aug 18, 2013

The E-M1 is an E-M5 that has gotten bigger, and has become lumpy and uglified like a modern DSLR.

Past sales results show that the market isn’t interested in buying DSLR cameras from Olympus. That’s why Olympus quit DSLRs and moved to m43.

Remember the knock against the 4/3 DSLRs? “The sensor is smaller but the lenses are the same size. What’s the point?” Nothing has changed since then.

The new Sigma f/1.8 zoom makes the Olympus f/2.0 zooms overpriced and obsolete. Why would someone with a Canon or Nikon DSLR switch to Olympus to use f/2.0 zooms when they can use a much less expensive Sigma f/1.8 zoom?

Why spend $1500 for an E-M1 when you can buy a real full-frame camera like the Canon 6D for only $1999? (True that doesn’t include a lens, but the point here is that the price differential between high-end small-sensor cameras and entry-level full-frame cameras has diminished a lot since Olympus first introduced the E-1.)

Only a tiny number of people still want to buy a camera in order to use 4/3 legacy lenses. They are a very vocal minority on this forum so you think their numbers are a lot larger than they really are. They are probably just a few hundred people, which is not enough of a customer base to support a new camera model. The vast majority of those who used 4/3 DSLRs either migrated to other brands of DSLRs (Canon, Nikon, etc.) or to micro four-thirds. I don’t know that very many of those want to go back.

What photographic mission does the E-M1 solve that you can't solve with another m43 camera and the Panasonic f/2.8 zooms? Birds in flight? Sports? The people doing that sort of shooting are using Canon and Nikon DSLRs and they aren't going to switch to Olympus.
