I know how to solve all of Nikon's problems
Aug 11, 2013

1. Abandon the CX mount. CX bodies and sensors can't offer enough manual controls or high enough IQ to meet the standards of people serious enough to be interested in changing lenses.

2. Stop making low end Coolpix and start making 1" fixed lens Coolpix with 3-5x zoom. This is an inevitable step if they want to remain competitive with phones into the foreseeable future, so might as well do it at the same time as they give up on CX. As a show of good will, offer a $50 Nikon gift card to anyone who purchased a CX body in the last 6 months.

3. Join the Micro 4/3 mount. It makes a lot more sense than for Nikon to start yet another new mirrorless lens mount which would make people skeptical about whether Nikon would support it long term. Micro 4/3 already has a huge lens line-up so Nikon wouldn't have the same problem as Sony NEX had and still to some degree has in competing with DSLRs and m4/3 itself. Also, a lot of people will be really upset at Nikon abandoning their mount and will turn somewhere else. Like m4/3. And if you join m4/3, they might buy your new cameras anyway because they don't have to worry so much about getting ditched again. And if you decide to leave m4/3 in the future it won't upset your customers or cause you a huge loss because there will be other companies to continue the mount.

Alternatively Nikon could start a DX mirrorless line but then they would always be behind Sony, and as Sony is finding out the alpha and NEX lines are a little too close together and they are reconfiguring the whole product line over the next year.

4. Continue making prime lens DX-sized Coolpix like the A, in different focal lengths. 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and possibly 28-85mm zoom models for enthusiasts. And stop being ridiculous on the price. You sell the D3200 for $700 at launch with the kit lens, you should easily be able to sell a low end Coolpix A for at least as cheap. These will be mostly prime lens compacts so they won't overlap the 1" zoom compacts.

So to recap: 1" Coolpix zooms, m4/3 system cameras, DX Coolpix primes. Easy to understand and easy to market.
