I have observed 2 different rufous hummingbirds in Michigan.  Last fall, I had an immature rufous/Allen's type show up at my feeders for 2 and a half weeks.  It never gave me a photo-op.  I saw an adult male rufous at a feeder in Williamston, Michigan actively feeding during a snow storm in late November.  A single gene mutation is believed to cause these hummingbirds from moving west to east rather than north and south during migration.  Some do survive the winters in less than favorable areas.........................Jim
