Johan is right; I do this all the time.
++ Highlights and Shadows, and,

++ Brightness, which tends to boost the midrange.
Check you saturation when you finish, if you boost a lot of shadows, you may need to increase the saturation a bit.

I tried but highlights doesn't recovery as many data as lowering exposure (with exposure slider) does, and it gives me weird "muted" look of white walls.
