When is a tripod redundant?

For normal use (weddings, reports, family, action...etc.) there is simply no time and space to use a tripod.

The wedding photographers I've watched have used a tripod for the formal group portraits in the church after the ceremony and for all other group portraits as well.

If your question was related to how low a shutter speed can we handhold, I'd say I can get away with as low as 1/20 (sometimes even lower) with the 24-70. I shoot a burst, and one picture always comes out sharp
