At which point would you be willing to trade your camera for phone ?

A couple discussions on this board and article I read got me thinking...

I use interchangeable lens cameras, because I like the image quality they produce, the fact that each lens has it's own character, the low light capability, level of control over final output.

What would a phone have to offer to make me give it all up ?

At least three things:

  • Perfect "basic" image quality straight out. I.e. sharp, high resolution and dynamic range, in focus photo with proper exposure, white balance, no JPEG artefacts
  • Low light, high shutter speed, object tracking capabilities that are on par with real cameras.
  • Really good software based lens effects - such as selectively applied bokeh, colors, etc.

At this point, I could probably use a phone (glasses, whatever) as my only camera.

All of this is doable, and probably eventually will be done. But I don't see this happening in the nearest 10 years. I may be wrong, though.
