It certainly wasn't abnormal 30 years ago, I still have a Canon and a Minolta with their 50mm kit lenses from years back.  And I often use just the 50 on many outings with my D700 Nikon.  It is a matter of personal choice.  Even if my plan was to simply use one prime, I'd still prefer an interchangeable lens camera in case I changed my mind down the road.
