When is wide angle really essential?

When is wide angle really essential?

So zooms obviously are useful for sports photography, and because the more reach you have with a camera, the more you can capture intimate moments.

But wide angle -- what's it really good for? If 35mm is what the equivalent human perception is ... APS-C equivalent of 52.5mm, in what instance is wideangle really needed? Like, there are paparazzi moments where you really do need an optical zoom in order to get the shot, but for wide angle, which tend to be of architecture and landscapes, you really can just move back without issue. Also, wide angles overlap greatly with phone cameras, while what phone cameras cannot do very well (yet) is optical zoom.

Basically, I"m asking why bother with like 18mm with my DSLR. I might just have my lowest reach be a 35mm.
