Your honest is refreshing.  I don't use it often, but also find P is a good "safe" mode when there is no time to set up - particularly with the new auto-ISO implementation.  This combination keeps the shutter speed up at long focal lengths. On my D700 I used to use S mode plus auto ISO (older version) to accomplish this.
