I use 'P' when I hand my camera to someone who I know doesn't understand the basics of exposure, or how operate a camera properly. I also will turn 'P' when I turn off my camera, just incase I need to shoot as soon as I turn on my camera. It's happened that I have grabbed my camera and had to shoot too quickly for even 'A' or 'S' mode.

I use 'M' mode when doing studio work, or super slow stuff like landscape photography. I have many old cameras which only have a 'M' mode. I have no problem with 'M' shooting, but I would always prefer to use either 'A' or 'S' and the exposure compensation options on a camera
