Hello vjk2,

I've never used an extension tube, so can't really comment on availability or performance. Usually, shooting at ISO 100 allows a crop that approaches 1:1 image size without noise or image quality reduction. The 1:2 ratio also means you're not right on top of insects, which makes both the bug and the photographer more comfortable.

There are 2 current or recent Pentax 100mm Macros that are 1:1. The DFA 100mm f/2.8, rating 9.66 on PentaxForum.com, about $800 new and $600-$700 used.

The older series FA 100mm f/2.8 is 1:1 also, rating 9.53, about $400-$600 used.

The FA 100mm Macro was also made in an f/3.5 version, without focus limiter and only 1:2 ratio. I believe this is a re-badged Cosina, they have a version with exactly the same specs. Either one can be found used for $100-$200, the Pentax version being somewhat higher priced. PF rates the FA 100mm f/3.5 at 8.63.

I also used the M100 Macro as a telephoto and it served quite well. But I later acquired an M 100mm f/2.8 that was lighter, faster and seemed equally sharp at tele distances.

Good Luck with the M100 Macro, close-up photography is addictive!

Ron
