It was just a thought to reduce DSLR camera weight.

First, on one hand, the 40mm f2.8 is a great lens. Great IQ, small size and weight and you almost could store the T3i with that lens in your pocket.

Secondly, on the other hand, in a DSLR APS-C camera, the field of view of that lens is equivalent to 64mm in a FF camera. It means that the 40mm lens is not that useful in crop cameras.

So you have to chose which carasteristic is more important for you. Several guys prefer a zoom like the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 or Tamron 17-50 f2.8, but if cost it is important for you, i would recommend the EF-S 18-55 f3.5-5.6 IS II, which has good reviews and a small price and weight.
