Re: Size matters? Maybe: a photo comparison of superzooms

Comparison photos of relative superzoom camera sizes (from Camerasize.com) seen from the front, with a few mFT's and DSLR's thrown in for comparison purposes:

And viewed from the top with zooms mounted on the mFT's and DSLR's:

Unfortunately this site doesn't allow you to see top views of the superzooms with lenses fully extended for a more fair comparison.

I found it interesting that the FZ70 is larger than Panasonic's new full-featured mFT G6 and virtually the same height and width as Nikon's popular mid-sized DSLR, the D5200. Guess you can take it one of two ways: either it's awfully large for a superzoom, or its about the same size as your average consumer grade DSLR yet packs a built-in 20-1200mm f2.8-5.9 lens for $400.

Downside? It's with a much smaller sensor than an mFT sensor (G6 and E-PL5 sensor is 8X the size of the FZ70's) and the Nikon's APS-C sensor (D5200 sensor is 13X the size of the FZ70's). Result, can't crop images nearly as much with superzooms without drastically reducing image quality and introducing noise, however it's this very reduction in crop size of the sensor that allows for such compact long zooms.

For an overload of info or if having trouble sleeping, read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_sensor_format

Life's full of compromises . Hey, for a measly $400 (figure $300 in 6 months), its a fun tool that allows you to shoot virtually any subject provided you have decent light and don't plan on cropping much.
