It's brighter than the competition at both ends, so it's likely better than the competition at all other focal lengths as well - not bad. Kudos to Panasonic - they've had sand kicked in their eyes for letting the competition outreach them in recent years and have clearly delivered a salvo in return.

that has always been the problem with going wider. The lens becomes less useful indoors at the focal lengths required. I suspect it will be at f4 by 28-35mm.

This camera needs to compete on specs and going wider allows the same focal length to look better for the FZ70. Both the SX50 and the FZ70 max out at 1200mm equivalent, but by starting at 20mm vs 24mm, the FZ70 can claim a 60X zoom vs the SX50's now paltry 50X zoom. Even though both camera have the same effective magnification, Panasonic can rightly claim that the FZ70 has more zoom [range]. Competing on specs, they can also claim to be wider, and brighter at both ends.

We're already seeing the effect - here's a snippet from the imaging-resource hands-on preview:

The Panasonic FZ70's LUMIX DC Vario lens delivers a maximum aperture of f/2.8-5.9 across its 60x zoom range, which is fairly bright compared to the competition. The Canon SX50, for example, sees maximum aperture fall from f/3.4 to f/6.5 across its shorter zoom range.
