Zimmerman profiled a complete stranger and decided he was guilty (His words to the police indicate he didn't want him to get away).

Zimmerman (knowing he was armed with a loaded gun) decided (against the advice of the police) to follow this complete stranger.

Zimmerman ends up in a fight with this stranger and wins (as he had the only gun).

If Zimmerman believed the interloper was guilty then putting himself into a position where confrontation was more likely was provocation.

At worst, Martin reacted violently to being stalked by someone he didn't know and his anger got him killed by said stalker.

At best, Zimmerman put himself into a situation where confrontation was likely.
