DSLR viewfinder is like f/2.8
Jul 16, 2013

I have a question that I'm totally perplexed over. I have a f/1.4 lens. I compose and shoot a photo at f/1.4. The resulting image isn't anything like what I saw in the viewfinder since there's less depth of field. This resulted in an area that's not in the correct focus that I wished was in focus. I then had to do the trial and error of fine focusing the lens on the camera. People say that what you see in the viewfinder is equivalent to looking at a subject at f/2.8 thus the focus errors and more depth of field.

So my question is that if you have a lens that's set at f/1.4 why aren't I focusing at f/1.4? How can I be viewing and focusing on a subject at f/2.8? Why doesn't it just show us f/1.4 through the viewfinder? It's frustrating at times. Does the camera stop the lens down to f/2.8?

Always have a camera with you and make sure you use it.
