Most of the deposits likely are calcium carbonate, as suggested.  I agree that an acid like vinegar will remove them, but I'm not sure what they might do the filter.  I agree with trying some very pure water first as a rinse.  Distilled might do the trick, as would the output of a good RO/DI system.
