Thom Hogan: Canon Gets it Wrong with the EOS M
Jul 15, 2013

He is a smart observer and often right.

At $299/$349 the fire sale camera can be worth buying with no system future, but not selling the lenses in the US is a very bad sign.

The EOS-m seems to me to be a killer system if and only if:

  1. Canon fixes the AF with EF lenses so it is in-line with NEX (NEX AF is poorer than m43 but competitive enough so NEX sales are good).
  2. A simpler, easier to make camera must cost less than a mechanically far more complex entry-level DSLR. Mirrorless is past the fast early growth.
  3. Build the system with lenses that are not more expensive than comparable DSLR lenses.

These are all necessary. So far only #2 is in place, and only in a fire sale.
