How do I do this (or is it even possible)?

How do I do this (or is it even possible)?

I have a series of photographs that were taken using a tripod.

The purpose was to create a stop motion video. The whole sequence is approx 100 photos and creating the stop motion has worked fine (I generally use PS CS6 but to be honest I used windows live movie maker to create the stop motion - it just seamed easier to set frame rates etc.).

What I want to know is this. The sequence was made in a garden on a very calm day and the background is pretty rock solid (with the exception of some very minor leaf movement). Is there a way to compare 2 images and REMOVE where there is commonality. This would (in my feeble mind!) remove the background and let me superimpose the players on to another background.

Is this at all possible - if so with what software?

TIA.

John
