What have you learned about photography?
Jul 14, 2013

I guess I'm asking you to write about just one thing you know about photography, the most important thing that you have learned.

During the Andy Williams days, there used to be a very good photographer nicknamed "Shutter" who hung out here. One day he posted a thread that said that we should put away our cameras between 10 am and 4 pm, because the sunlight was too bright for good photography during the middle of the day, and the angle of the sun made the shadows ugly.

I didn't agree with him at the time, because I thought I could post-process anything to look the way I wanted it to. I thought I could adjust the settings on my camera to take a good shot in any light.  I thought it was about me and the camera and the subject.

But I've come to believe that Shutter was right.  It's about the light.
