Yeah, its a bit confusing, after years of M, S, A, P, Auto modes.  If you set the Shutter Speed dial (what I think you mean by the camera dial on the top plate) to A, then the on-lens switch to the image of shutter petals (NOT "A"), setting the aperture by rotating the Aperture ring while finding the aperture setting you prefer on-screen, you'll be in Aperture Priority.

That's probably as clear as mud (and maybe not what you were asking about anyway)! As another Old Timer, I'm used to getting a bit confused.
