Solution to the shrinking point and shoot market?

Cell phones with cameras are taking over the market segment and putting a damper on P&S camera sales. Funny thing is the most common camera phones are nothing to write home about with their tiny sensors and fixed pinhole lenses.

If the camera companies could offer something in the $150 range that is better than current offerings, it could possibly stem the tide.

One problem with the current P&S cameras is that, although the resolution is higher than most camera phones, the image quality is abysmal even at base ISO. Smeary, low contrast details, shooting in low light/indoors, is worse. Joe Consumer see this and has no reason for another camera beyond his or her cell phone.

Make a reasonable cost camera that can give better images, especially in lower light, and Joe Consumer may choose to buy a camera to use when he wants better images. Let's not confuse Joe/Jane Consumer with a photo enthusiast who wants something more versatile, like a ILC or SLR or even an upscale $400+ P&S. Just something better that the consumer may buy if they want better pictures than from their cell phone.

The question is if it can be done and if the camera company make a profit. I don't know.
