an upgrade to the existing 7D?

You have to keep in mind that you're comparing a camera introduced in 2009 with one being introduced in 2013. Obviously, the technology is going to be a newer and improved in the 2013 camera compared to the 2009 camera. So even though the 70D is positioned below the 7D, it will have many aspects to it that are definite upgrades over the much older 7D. Frankly, I do think the 70D is an upgrade over the 7D.

Only one team has been at bat yet and you are declaring a winner. Of course the 70D has some things that aren't on the 7D. The 7D is not carved in stone - guess what, Canon is not going to just keep making it eternally "as is".

Actually, the 7D *is* carved in stone.  It is what it is, and it's a 2009 camera.  And yes, Canon is going to keep making it "as is".  Then they'll discontinue it and replace it with a 7D MKII.

70D looks in some ways like an upgrade but it is not the replacement for the 7D. Trust me.

Did I ever say that that the 70D was Canon's replacement for the 7D?  Obviously, the 70D replaces the 60D, as its numerical name certainly indicates.  But my point is that, with the forward march of technology and model improvements, the 70D can match and even exceed the 7D in many aspects.  And frankly, I would not be surprised if some 7D owners did replace their 7D with a 70D, maybe because they're tired of using a heavier, larger body, maybe they don't want to spend the extra cash on a 7D MKII (which will surely be more expensive than a 70D), maybe the 70D does everything they needed the 7D to do but now with additional features such as WiFi and better Live View AF, etc.
