70D has a new sensor and the new Dual Pixel AF system in Live View and Video but the AF used with the view finder is less than the 7D. IMHO, at best it's better but not meant to be the 7D upgrade.

To be more precise: the 19 point AF system is the same, but the SW features it comes with are are reduced (no spot AF and no point expansion AF).

Canon made a big deal, and rightfully so, out of the AF point expansion on the 7D because it was taken from the 1D. It is extremely useful for maintaining focus in very challenging situations. The 70D doesn't have it. Why would an upgrade to the 7D lack something it had before? Wouldn't that constitute a... downgrade?

Someone said 'most people wouldn't notice this or that' on the 70D vs the 7D, where the 70D has less capability, but the 7D or its replacement are not aimed at 'most people'. The people they're aimed at would not be amused to see that their magnesium-bodies, 100% viewfinder, zone-focusing, deep-burst-buffer camera had been replaced by the model one level up from a Rebel.

Nothing wrong with a Rebel OR a 70D! But they are not the same level as a 7D or 7D Mk II.
