I actually use the 12-35mm at least once a week. It's just a question of tradeoffs. If you're a professional photographer, it might make sense to own stuff that you rarely use. But if you're an amateur, less so, unless money's no object...

The new development over the last few years is the ability rent at a reasonable price. For instance, if you order from lensrentals, it costs $49 + $25 shipping to rent the Panasonic 7-14mm lens for four days. See https://www.lensrentals.com/rent/micro-four-thirds/lenses/wide/panasonic-7-14mm-f4.

Obviously this option wouldn't work for someone going on an extended trip or if the need to use the lens arises at the last moment, but that wasn't why I posed the question at the outset.  The issue is not whether to use or not use; the question is at what point does it make sense to own rather than rent.
