Is your shutter button set on focus priority? Ie it will not take photo untill it focuses... if so:

- are you trying to focus on something closer than the len's minimum focus discance.... ie can you focus/take pictures of things further away?

- Are you trying to focus in really poor light? if so set your focus mode to AF-S and enable focus assist light

- Are you trying to focus on a geometric pattern (ie a grid) or a flat color/no contrast subject over entire focus point/area, if so then the phase detect focus module can't acquire focus.

- Are there any adapters, teleconverters, tubes, etc... that would cause the effective maximum aperture (aperture while wide open on viewfinder, not for actual photo) of the lens used to be smaller than F5.6
