Here is a thought:

Line pair is a step function on the target. As the light passes through real world glass the transition from white to black becomes blurred, which in turn changes the step function into a sine wave. While nyquist criteria is indeed 2 samples per wavelength (2 pixels per line pair) the peak stress algorithms tend to work best with 4 to 5 samples per wavelength; this way you are more likely to catch the peak values. What this means is that increase in linear resolution of the sensor up to 5x of the lppm resolving power of the lens should yield improvement in IQ.
