I think the tracking is really the main problem with the PDAF in the NEX 6/5r. The focussing it self would be fast enough for subjects moving towards the camera if the camera would predict movements better.

I find that the AF on the Nex-6 is really fast if I don't wait for the green confirmation boxes.  

As for tracking, have you tried using the special tracking option?  Seems weird to me to have to have a special menu selection.  But even with speed priority mode, it should be able to focus between shots, according to the manual.
