Is Canon onto a winner with its new on sensor phase detect?

Re: for what cameras is this?

I'm guessing they will try to replace the traditional phase detect for all of their models but high end. The new on-chip method should be cheaper to make. No separate AF sensor array, for example, reducing assembly time and BOM cost. It's interesting that they first equip the 70D with this new tech, it's far from the low-end in amateur/enthusiast territory.

I'm also wondering how they will make cross-type focus areas with this. The current sensor seems to be only sensitive to vertical edges, if the explanation in the 70D preview is correct.
