There are alternatives but it means a cheaper zoom (sigma) or a combo with TCs, and while they are good, they are no substitute for the 500 prime IMO as you're losing stops of light and AF speed.

This is all true - it's easy if you have the money. (And don't mind carrying a 4kg lens!)

The Sigma 500/4.5 is 3.09kg and very hand-holdable (if you ignore the fact it has no IS/OS).
