Why do speedlights in beauty dishes face forward?
Jul 1, 2013

This is possibly a dumb question, but why do beauty dishes that are designed for speedlights always have the flash at the back of the dish firing through a hole in the dish then bouncing off a deflector, spreading the light backward onto the reflecting surface of the dish?

Wouldn't a better design have the speedlight inside the dish facing backward already, with no hole in the dish so the light doesn't have to bounce twice? (and the volume consumed by the speedlight is disguised by it being inside the dish)
