Agreed on the contrast Ray...

I've been using Standard Picture Control with contrast and saturation both +1. I use a custom Picture Control to cancel the sharpening as soon as I open the image.

I do everything in Capture NX2. For sharpening I use a modification of Jason Odell's D800 technique: http://www.luminescentphoto.com/blog/2012/06/29/get-sharp-with-the-nikon-d800/ . I use the low pass globally, and the USM on a mask on the bird. I often bump it to (100, 2, 5). After down-sizing I do another global sharpening at (17,5,4).

For NR I use nothing to ISO 200; "Better Quality" on low for ISO 250-320, and "Better Quality 2012" at (10%, 50%) for ISO 400 to 800. If I need more NR I backtrack and go right from NX2 into Dfine2, the import the TIFF back into NX2 to finish.
