I got the 'free' 24-85mm kit lens back during the D600 promotion.  Being that I am on a budget I held on to it primarily to shoot it at 24mm for landscapes.  I finally got around to shooting it last week and to say the least, I wasn't thrilled with the results.  After shooting the Sigma 10-20 with my D7K, I found the Nikon to be really flat, lacking contrast and not sharp outside of the center.  It took a lot of PP to get some pop.  I only shot at the 24mm end though so maybe it gets better at FL outside the extreme end.  I've used the 24-85mm for candid shots of the kids and it was above average for that kind of work imo.

I've since moved on to the New 18-35G(well just got it yesterday) for landscapes and I've liked the results of my first handful of shots.
