China hasn't been "communist" since 1978.

The closest comparison that experts have made, and with which I agree, is to a fascist system - a semi-free market economy that still has large portions government controlled, such as transport and banks. This was similar to the systems in Taiwan and South Korea a few decades ago - Franco's Spain as well. The system was good at fast development, which has worked for China.

However, none of those countries mentioned above were able to sustain the model, so perhaps that has Beijing worried.

Another poster mentioned North Korea. That system is also not communist, but it's closer. It's more of a "communist monarchy," modeled on the Li (or Yi) dynasty that ended when the Japanese invaded a century ago. Like China until recently, they give lip-service to "communism,' but then go on to make their own system.
