How to fix shadows on photographed paper?

HiI recently visited a public archive in order to do some research. Unfortunately, some documents were quite large (maps) and photographing was only allowed without flash. So I did it anyway but am now struggling to properly remove the shadows from the folded papers, from the shadow the camera cast and the shadows because the original wasn't always perfectly flat...

I suppose this shouldn't be too hard but I didn't find the right technique yet.. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to handle this? I don't want a perfect copy but it would be nice to have a more or less clean image in the end without any grey shadows in parts of the image...

If you attempt to 'fix' this, please also describe the steps done so that I can try to reproduce..

I'm using Photoshop CS6

Thanks a lot

Matt
