SX50 - Raw vs. Jpg - Straight out of the camera

I haven't toyed with RAW much, but was surprised when I took these and compared raw to jpg, how much processing was involved.

RAW sooc--saved as jpg

Note the super wide angle and vignetting. Over exposed and whites blown out, yellow bias.

ISO 320, f3.4, 1/500sec.

JPG sooc

Note cropping, color correction and gamma curve change. Now I see why it's better to slightly under expose as you will recover more from blown highlights. The pink flowers are still overblown.

RAW sooc

Note overblown highlights, yellow bias, and noise. ISO 400, f5.0, 1/500 sec.

JPG sooc

Processor fixed blown out whites (see left top corner), fixed the color and bumped up the overall sharpness and reduced noise. Again, would be better if I had reduced EV by 1/3 I think. The Raw would have been a perfect exposure and the JPG slightly darker, but less blown out whites and easy to fix with a slight contrast/brightness tweak.

All in all, a great learning tool.
