$9200 in 1996 is $13.6K in today's inflation-adjusted dollars

However, in 1994 the original EF 600/4 non-IS was available for $7200 (which is when I bought it).  In inflation adjusted dollars, that's "only" $11.3K (the yen played submarine between 1994 and 1996, which accounts for the huge increase).

The basic point stands, though, the new generation of super-teles really aren't exceptionally priced. We've been spoiled by the prices of the first-gen IS lenses, the prices of which didn't keep up with inflation (probably because the original investment in research and factory tooling was paid off long, long before they were replaced).
